A wetsuit's thickness is the first thing to get right: 3mm for warm tropical water, 5-7mm for temperate seas, and semi-dry or drysuit setups for cold-water diving below roughly 15°C. Neoprene flexibility around the shoulders affects how tiring a dive feels after an hour underwater, and seam construction (flatlock, glued-and-blindstitched, or fully sealed) determines how much water seeps in. A snug but not restrictive fit is critical, since a loose wetsuit flushes cold water and undermines the insulation.
